Innovative Medicines Initiative meeting in Cyprus

June 19, 2012

€2 bln for research programmes

An informative meeting, which aims to promote Cypriot participation in the present and future calls of the European Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) project, the submission of research proposals and the creation of an IMI network in Cyprus, will be held on Tuesday 3rd July 2012, in the Amphitheatre of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, from 14:00 to 17:00.

The meeting is specially addressed to interested parties from the pharmaceutical industry, academia, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), patient organizations and regulatory agencies.

The event is organized by the Ministry of Health, the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation, the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, and the Cyprus Association of Research and Development Pharmaceutical Companies (KEFEA), which is also the sponsor.

Health Minister Dr. Stavros Malas will address the event. Speakers at the meeting will include, amongst others, the IMI Executive Director, Mr. Michael Goldman, who will be visiting Cyprus specifically for this meeting.

Through the conference, an effort will be made to establish an IMI network in Cyprus and, in addition, overcome the challenges and constraints facing Cypriot organizations to participate in IMI programmes.

The IMI is Europe’s largest public-private initiative aiming to speed up the development of better and safer medicines for patients. With a budget of €2 billion, this initiative supports collaboration for research projects and promotes the building of networks of industrial and academic experts for the development of innovative medicines in Europe.

IMI is a joint undertaking between the European Union and the pharmaceutical industry association EFPIA. The European Union contributes €1 billion to the IMI research programme, which is matched by in kind contributions worth at least another €1 billion from the member companies of EFPIA.
